Since June 2003, all the products used in a potentially explosive atmosphere launched onto the market or put into service, must comply with the directive 94/9/CE, better known as the directive on ATEX (“Atmosphere Explosive”) products,  revoking both the  previous directives and national legislation on explosive atmospheres within the EU. The directive 94/9/CE is applied to all products sold within the EU, whether manufactured within or outside the EEC.

In Italy the legislative decree D.Lgs. n° 233 del 12/06/03 – actuation of the directive 1999/92/CE relating to minimum safety standards for safeguarding the safety and the health of workers exposed to the risk of explosive atmospheres, has implemented the directive and where there are areas of the workplace with a risk of formation of an explosive atmosphere employers must prevent the formation of such an atmosphere and reduce the risk of explosion.

This legislation covers storage of inflammable substances, the chemical, wood and paint industries, the food industries that treat and store cereals and flour, the pharmaceutical industry… (and many others).
